The incident happened shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Strathmore Drive and Dorada Avenue.
Police officers were responding to a call about a man with a knife chasing people down the street and trying to start a fire.
Neighbors told Eyewitness News that several men were running through the streets, acting violently and trying to break into homes.
According to police, one of those men was shot and killed. Responding officers asked the man to drop his weapon. However, the man refused and officers opened fire, killing him.
The suspect's identity was not released.
Area residents told Eyewitness News they did not know who the man was. Neighbors said they were surprised by the shooting because they consider their neighborhood quiet and safe.
