Jimi Hendrix has been named the greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone.

The Seattle-born musician died after suffering a drug overdose in 1970. He was 27, making him part of the legendary "27 Club" of musicians who passed away at that age. He was known for hits such as "Foxy Lady," "Purple Haze" and "Little Wing" and preferred to play Fender Stratocaster guitars.

No. 2 on Rolling Stone's list is Eric Clapton. The 66-year-old British singer, songwriter and guitarist released his 20th studio album, "Clapton," in September 2010.

Jimmy Page placed third on the list. The 67-year-old former Led Zeppelin guitarist last released a major solo record in 2000. No. 4 is Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. The 67-year-old continues to perform and released a compilation album, "Vintage Vinos" in 2000. He also played Jack Sparrow's father in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films.

The rest of the top 10 is as follows:

5. Jeff Beck
