Security guard busts 4-year-old for shoplifting

November 25, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
A security guard was fired after busting a 4-year-old girl for shoplifting in Everett, Wash.

Savannah Harp allegedly grabbed a bag of dried fruit, ate some and then put the bag back on the shelf. Harp's father didn't notice, but a security guard did.

The girl's mother Alissa Jones said the guard told them the girl was banned and that the store would be pressing charges.

The guard even told the girl to sign a form stating that she understands that she couldn't go into any more Safeway stores. Since the girl couldn't write her name, the guard made her scribble on the form.

The guard has since been fired, and Safeway has apologized.

A store spokewoman said while shoplifting policies are there to protect customers, guards have to use common sense.
