Los Angeles police officers tried to clear out the streets of downtown Los Angeles as Occupy protesters stayed past the eviction deadline Monday morning.

Authorities said their main priority was to move the demonstrators out of the streets before the morning rush hour.

The freeways around downtown were not affected by the protests.

Surface streets around City Hall, including the intersection of 1st and Main streets and Temple and 3rd streets, were closed for several hours.

The streets reopened to traffic after 6 a.m. when protesters were moved onto the sidewalks.
