Man shoots self after hours-long barricade in La Mirada home

LA MIRADA, Calif.

Deputies were responding to a report of gunshots in the 14600 block of Mercado Avenue at about 7:30 a.m. Authorities said a woman told them a man in a home on the 15900 block of Algeciras Drive fired a handgun.

The suspect, a convicted felon, wouldn't talk to authorities, and the barricade forced the lockdown of Los Coyotes Middle School nearby. Deputies surrounded the home, evacuated residents in the area and summoned a SWAT team.

At about 11 a.m., police said the suspect shot at officers on the street, but no one was injured. At that time, officials decided to evacuate students from the school and bus them to the gym at La Mirada Regional Park, about a half-mile from the campus.

At one point, SWAT officers fired tear gas into the home.

After about nine hours, SWAT officers went inside the home and found the suspect dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to sheriff's officials.
