OTRC: Chord Overstreet returns to 'Glee' with surprising storyline

Chord Overstreet is set to return to "Glee" on Tuesday to reprise his role of Sam Evans.

But fans might be surprised when they learn what Sam has been up to since leaving McKinley High at the end of last season (Warning: Spoiler Alert!).

In a preview for the episode, which is entitled "Hold on to Sixteen," Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith) go on a quest to find a secret weapon for the New Directions, so that they can beat the Trouble Tones. The pair decides to track down Sam and eventually find him working as a male stripper in a group called "White Chocolate."

Overstreet's character was introduced as a transfer student in season 2 of the FOX musical comedy series. At the end of the season, it was revealed that Sam's father had lost his job and the family was living in a motel. During the season 3 premiere, viewers learned that Sam's family moved out of state.

Overstreet will appear on a multi-episode arc of the series, just in time for sectionals.

"Finn and Rachel are looking for somebody to help them with sectionals," Overstreet told Entertainment Weekly of his return. "So they bring [Sam] back to school. He tries to kind of pick everything back up where he left off and he realizes that everything has has changed a little bit since he's gone. He has to kind of re-adapt a little bit."

It was reported earlier this year that Overstreet would not be made a series regular like his cast mates Darren Criss and Harry Shum Jr. Sources close to the matter had said Overstreet was not fired and was welcome to reprise his recurring role. He has not yet appeared on episodes of the third season, which began in September

The actor has been keeping busy by writing and recording music. He also appeared in an episode of the ABC comedy series "The Middle," which aired at the end of September.

"I wanted to do a bunch of recording and take time to do that," Overstreet told Entertainment Weekly. "Luckily, everything kind of opened back up [in my schedule] so I could jump back in... Right now, we're playing it by ear, having fun and just enjoying doing that and doing music also."

Chord Overstreet's "Glee" return is set to air on Tuesday, December 6 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. Watch a preview below.
