Construction debt dispute leads to fatal shooting

HESPERIA, Calif.

Sheriff's deputies from the Hesperia station were called to a residence at 16600 Sequoia St. at 8 p.m. Sunday. A 911 call reported gunshots fired and a man possibly shot.

Deputies arrived at the location and surrounded it. The residents, including suspect Moses Echavarria, 32, came outside, and Echavarria was taken into custody, according to the sheriff's department.

A subsequent homicide investigation revealed Hesperia resident Andrew Battaglia, 29, had been shot, and a second victim had been assaulted after the two men and two others had shown up at the residence to discuss a construction debt.

A physical confrontation ensued, and Battaglia was shot.

Battaglia's friends had transported Battaglia to Desert Valley Hospital before deputies arrived at the scene. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The second victim, a 58-year-old Hesperia resident who was not identified, was treated at a local hospital for facial injuries.

Echevarria was interviewed by homicide detectives and booked for murder at West Valley Detention Center. He was held without bail.

The investigation remained ongoing Monday.
