OTRC: Robert Downey Jr.'s wife Susan on baby gender announcement: 'I was like, 'Really?' (Video)

Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan talk to OnTheRedCarpet.com at the premiere of 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows' on Dec. 6, 2011.

Robert Downey Jr. says he did not get in trouble with his wife, Susan, for revealing the gender of their unborn child on national television.

The 46-year-old actor said during an interview with host Jay Leno on NBC's "Tonight Show" on Monday that the two are expecting a baby boy in late February of 2012.

When asked at the recent Los Angeles premiere of his new film, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," if he got in trouble for making the announcement, Downey Jr. told OnTheRedCarpet.com and other news outlets: "No. Not really. She's very sweet," adding: "If I told you the name, she'd lop off my head with a machete."

"Yeah, then there'd be trouble," his wife added.

This will be the first child that he and Susan Downey, who is one of the movie's producers, will have together. The actor has an 18-year-old son, Indio, from a previous marriage.

Susan Downey, 38, said that her husband's on-air announcement about their baby's gender was unplanned and that he told her about it moments after he filmed his interview.

"I can never really stay mad at him," she told OnTheRedCarpet.com host Rachel Smith. " He came sheepishly ... I was over at Warner Bros. (Studios), which is around the corner from 'Leno,' and he came through and he immediately admitted it. I was like, 'Really?'"

"It wasn't some preset gag, like they do sometimes - not at all," she added. "He said, 'I should have followed it up by saying, 'Well no, actually it's a girl' and let people be confused. I said, 'But you weren't trying to lie, you were actually trying to tell them what the situation was.' He's like, 'Yeah, good point.'"

Susan Downey, has co-produced many of her husband's movies, including the first "Sherlock Holmes" film, which came out in 2009, and "Gothika," which was released in 2003, almost two years before the two married.

"We met on 'Gothika,'" she said. "We did 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' and the first 'Sherlock' and in between, I was on 'Iron Man 2' and 'Due Date' so I'm really used to it. There's nothing strange about it. I just like seeing him. he's so talented."

The first "Sherlock Holmes" film, director's Guy Ritchie on-screen adaptation to a hit mystery novel franchise, introduced the main characters detective Sherlock Holmes, played by Downey Jr., and his sidekick Dr. John Watson, portrayed by Jude Law. The sequel sees them investigating the death of the Crown Prince of Austria and is set for release on December 16 (watch the trailer).

In the film, Holmes teams up with a Gypsy fortune teller named Sim, played by Noomi Rapace, who starred in the 2009 Swedish movie "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." The detective and Watson travel the world to try and stop the evil Professor James Moriarty, played by Jared Harris of "Mad Men" fame. Rachel McAdams reprises her role as Holmes' love interest, Irene Adler.

"It's so rare that you can make (a sequel) that's actually as good as or even better than the first movie and I think we did it," Susan Downey said.

When asked about the possibility of a third "Sherlock Holmes" film, she said: "I don't know, let's see how we do. We'll do it if they let us."

Downey Jr. is the seventh-highest paid actor in the world, according to Forbes, which said last month that the star earned $31 million between May 2010 and May 2011.

Downey Jr. is set to reprise his "Iron Man" title role in a third film based on the superhero and in the 2012 movie "The Avengers." Forbes recently ranked the actor No. 6 on its 2011 list of "Best Actors For The Buck," saying that for every dollar he is paid, his films bring in an average of $18.74.
