Ryan Gosling claims he got his breakout role in "The Notebook" because the director thought he "lacked conventional sex appeal."
"The director, Nick Cassavetes, called me to meet him at his house," Gosling told the British magazine Company. "When I got there, he was standing in his back yard, and he looked at me and said, 'I want you to play this role because you're not like the other young actors out there in Hollywood. You're not handsome, you're not cool, you're just a regular guy who looks a bit nuts.'"
Though Cassavetes might have thought Gosling was lacking in the looks department, there was recently outrage over the fact that Bradley Cooper was named "The Sexiest Man Alive," even from Cooper himself who agreed with the backlash and said Gosling, "literally looks like he's in a photo shoot, like he just came off the runway."
The 31-year-old actor told Company that he was inspired to go into acting after watching Raquel Welch in an episode of "The Muppet Show."
"She was dancing with this big furry spider and I immediately fell in love," Gosling recalled. "She was the first crush I ever had, and I thought, 'How do I get to meet this woman?'And then I thought, 'Well, she's on TV, so to meet her I have to get on TV myself...[I was a] lonely child. I didn't do well at school and TV was my only friend."
Gosling recently appeared in the romantic comedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love" opposite Emma Stone and in the political thriller "The Ides of March," opposite George Clooney. He has also appeared in films like "Half Nelson" and "Blue Valentine."
Gosling scored the coveted role in "The Notebook" opposite Rachel McAdams, who he dated between 2005 and 2007. He has also been romantically linked to Sandra Bullock and Kristen Dunst.
Gosling has reportedly been dating Eva Mendes since September. The pair were spotted kissing at Disneyland and vacationing in Paris last month. Gosling and Mendes, 37, recently filmed "The Place Beyond the Pines" together. The film also features Rose Byrne, Greta Gerwig and Bradley Cooper.
He is currently filming "Gangster Squad" opposite his "Crazy Stupid Love" co-star Emma Stone. In the upcoming 1940s cop drama, Stone plays a "a sharp-tongued siren caught in a love triangle" between a drug-dealer played by Sean Penn and a cop played by Ryan Gosling, according to Variety.
