Although Rooney Mara is about to show American audiences how dedicated she is to her role as Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl With The Dragaon Tattoo," the actress isn't a fan of one of her earliest roles.
The 26-year-old appeared in a 2006 episode of "Law & Order:Special Victims Unit" in an episode titled "Fat." Mara, who was then credited as Tricia Mara after her first name Patricia, played a girl named Jessica DeLay who gets attacked by two overweight students. The audience later learns that DeLay initiated attacks on her classmates.
It was Mara's first television credit and second on-screen acting role. The show is currently in its 13th season.
"It was so awful. So stupid. People are obsessed with that show. I don't get it," she told Allure magazine in an interview published in its January 2012 issue. "Me and my boyfriend -- although I don't look old enough to have a boyfriend -- went and beat up these fat people, and at the end of the show you find out that I used to be obese and I hate fat people."
She added, "It's ridiculous. Who would ever do that? Who would beat someone up because they're fat? And as retribution, they sodomized her."
"I mean, I've been sodomized since the beginning of my career. I should have known then it would come full circle," Mara quips.
Mara has also starred in movies such as the remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" in 2010 and had a recurring part on the medical drama "ER" in 2009.
The actress, who now goes by her given middle name Rooney, was nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Performance By An Actress In A Motion Picture - Drama for her role in "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" on December 15.
In the film she plays Lisbeth Salander, a superhacker, private investigator and rape survivor who helps Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist played by James Bond actor Daniel Craig, tackle a freelance assignment by an elderly businessman who wants to find out what happened to his grand-niece. The film hits theaters on December 20.
A Swedish film adaptation of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" was released in 2009 and starred Noomi Rapace as Salander.
Mara was so dedicated to the role that she previously told the magazine that it was "necessary" to get a real nipple piercing to play the part of Salander.
"I'm naked quite a lot in the movie," Mara said. "And I thought, (Salander) has it in the book, and she should have it [in the movie]. Because of all the tattoos and the makeup and the piercings, and the physical transformations my body has to go through, it would always feel sort of like I was in costume, even if I was naked."
