OTRC: Kate Middleton draws comparisons to Princess Diana in strapless gown

Kate Middleton, formally known as the Duchess of Cambridge, drew comparisons to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana, in a stunning black strapless gown.

Middleton wore a strapless black velvet Alexander McQueen gown to the Sun Military Awards at the Imperial War Museum in London on Monday. The royal was accompanied by William, the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

Diana wore a similar style dress, with a ruffled sweetheart neckline, to her first official engagement in 1981, a fundraiser for The Royal Opera House, which was held at London's Goldsmith's Hall, when she was still Prince Charles' fiancée.

The strapless silk taffeta dress was designed by Elizabeth and David Emanuel, who also designed Diana's wedding gown. Middleton's strapless number was also designed by her wedding dress designer, Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen.

Both women accessorized with a diamond necklace, bracelet and earrings, and the same sapphire engagement ring, which William presented to Kate.

Middleton has been the target of pregnancy rumors over the past months, most notably for turning down peanut paste, but she appeared to be very slim at the event.

Also fueling the rumor is the fact that British parliament recently changed the country's succession law to allow females to become the head of the monarchy. The previous rule had been in place for over 300 years.

If the royal becomes pregnant and has a daughter, she could be queen of England.

In the fall, it was announced that Prince William and Kate are planning to open a children's cancer center at a hospital in their native United Kingdom.

William, the 29-year-old Duke of Cambridge, is the president of the Royal Marsden Hospital's NHS Foundation Trust. The 29-year-old Duchess of Cambridge has been researching potential charities to support formally. She appears to be following in the footsteps of Princess Diana, who was known for her global humanitarian efforts.

William married Kate Middleton in London on April 29 in a ceremony watched by millions of people around the world, including more than 22 million viewers in the United States.
