'We Bought a Zoo' director tells emotional story

LOS ANGELES

In "We Bought a Zoo," Matt Damon plays a widower who moves his family to a new environment, and it won't be easy. The film, which is based on a true story, may bring tears to the eyes.

"We're trying to tell an emotional story that kind of sneaks up on you and kind of creates a feeling," said director Cameron Crowe. "It's a new thing for me. I've never quite made a movie like this."

Crowe also co-wrote the script.

"My goal is that you go see a movie, and it feels like you're eavesdropping on real life," he said. "I think you know the difference when a movie sounds like movie people talking, living a movie life."

Crowe picked the experienced Colin Ford to play Damon's son and newcomer Maggie Elizabeth Jones to play his daughter.

"It's a huge fun thing when somebody walks in out of their little town someplace with a dream of being in the movies, and you just kind of say, 'Come along on our journey,'" Crowe said.

"We Bought a Zoo" is rated PG.
