Hollywood has taken over Palm Springs, at least for the next 10 days. The 23rd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival kicked off Thursday night with a sold-out crowd.

More than 1,000 people attended the first screening of "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen," starring Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt.

Blunt made an appearance at the screening and spoke about her goals for the movie.

"I want people to feel a great sense of hope. I want people to enjoy a film. It's very much like a breath of fresh air," she said.

A total of 187 films from 73 countries will be shown during the festival. The event wraps up on Jan. 16.
