OTRC: Kate Beckinsale: 'Contraband' made putting on 'Underworld' catsuit hard

Kate Beckinsale talks to OnTheRedCarpet.com about 'Contraband.'

Kate Beckinsale was taxed with the difficult challenge of training for "Underworld: Awakening" while filming "Contraband" in New Orleans, one of the nation's foodie capitals and told OnTheRedCarpet.com it was not a fun task.

"The whole time I was preparing for 'Underworld,' I was actually shooting 'Contraband,' so New Orleans is a wonderful city, but it's not the most fantastic place to get in shape because we want to go try those beignets and all those wonderful things," Beckinsale told OnTheRedCarpet.com in a satellite interview to promote "Contraband."

"It's got the worst kind of 'Underworld' suit food, really. So it was a miracle," Beckinsale continued. "I guess having had a lot of training for the first one, thank goodness, it wasn't quite as extensive as that but there were still a lot of complicated fight scenes to learn and stunts I hadn't done before and just the sheer terror of getting back into that suit, which is a bit like a put your bikini on and stand in Times Square kind of feeling."

In "Contraband," which hit theaters on January 13, the English actress portrays Mark Wahlberg's husband. The film is an English language adaptation of the 2008 Icelandic movie "Reykjavic-Rotterdam," which follows a former smuggler who works as a night guard and is dragged in for one more job in his former shady profession when his life is threatened after his brother-in-law botches a smuggling run.

"The movie's about Mark Walhberg's character who used to be a smuggler basically, and since getting married to me and us having two sons, has turned straight and doesn't do that anymore," Beckinsale explained. "But then my brother gets involved with some similar stuff and then he dumps a shipment of drugs and owes the wrong people money and so the only way for him to really get out of that mess is if Mark comes back and does one more run. So that's what happens and it all gets somewhat tense."

Even though New Orleans offered some dangerous food temptations, Beckinsale said she fell in love with the unique city and felt that it was its own character in the film.

"It was wonderful actually, because I had never been to New Orleans before and I guess until you go there, you can't realize what a character that place is -- as much as any of us in the movie are," Beckinsale said. "It's such a specific and particular place. I fell completely in love with New Orleans, I loved it and it was really helpful because our characters are supposed to have accents from there and it would have been really difficult to have done that without having gone."

Beckinsale obviously got into her skintight "Underworld" catsuit in time to film the upcoming movie, but she still has a healthy New Year's resolution.

"I walk around holding a bottle of water a lot and my resolution this year is to actually drink it," Beckinsale laughed. "I think I've drunk it just because I'm carrying it from the car to the house and back out again, I've just got to drink more water, I think."

The 37-year-old British actress is known for the "Underworld" vampire films, including a fourth installment "Underworld: Awakening," which is due in theaters on Jan. 20, 2012. She has also appeared in films like "Pearl Harbor," "Serendipity," "Click" and "Van Helsing."

The actress is slated to appear in the upcoming "Total Recall" reboot opposite Colin Farrell, Ethan Hawke, Bryan Cranston and Jessica Biel.
