Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Hutcherson had an awkward moment when they were asked how long they've been dating while promoting their upcoming film, "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island."
"We're not," Hutcherson said on the Australian morning television show "Today," after the pair shared an uncomfortable glance. "We were at one point, but she broke my heart. No, I'm just kidding, that was a while ago, we're really good friends now."
Hudgens is currently dating "Switched at Birth" actor Austin Butler, 20, who has appeared on TV series like "Life Unexpected," "Zoey 101" and "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide."
Hudgens and Hutcherson first sparked rumors that they were dating in February 2011, following Hudgen's split from actor Zac Efron. They further fueled the speculation at a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game in March.
Hudgens, 23, and Hutcherson, 19, who co-starred in "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," previously remained mum on the nature of their relationship. The two attended several star-studded events together last spring, including the premiere of Hudgen's movie "Beastly" and the Independent Spirit Awards.
"Yes, I'm single," Hudgens told Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show in March, when asked about Hutcherson. "Can't a girl have friends?"
Hudgens and Efron, 24, played a couple in the 2006 Disney Channel movie "High School Musical" and dated for five years. It was reported in December 2010 that they broke up and the actress said in February that the two were "figuring things out." Hudgens told DeGeneres last week that she and Efron remain friends.
"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" is set for release on February 10 and also stars Kristin Davis of "Sex and the City" and Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson. Hutcherson has also appeared in movies such as "The Kids Are All Right" and recently filmed a part in the upcoming remake of the hit 1980s war movie "Red Dawn."
Hudgens shocked fans in July when she was pictured with her character's short, chopped hair. She said in an interview with the television show "Access Hollywood" that she cut her own locks while filming a scene for the film.
"I grabbed the scissors and started cutting my actual hair and then my director decided that he was going to grab the scissors, he grabs a chunk of my hair and just chops it," she said.
