Penny Johnson Jerald of 'Castle' in law school

LOS ANGELES

"I'm in law school," said Penny Johnson Jerald.

On "Castle," Jerald plays a police captain, but in life, the acting vet has been quietly working on a second occupation.

"I've always had a fascination with law. Three years ago, I challenged my daughter to do something, and she said, 'Well, I'll do it, if you do it,'" said Jerald.

Jerald's acting work keeps her busy, so she didn't really have time to add law school to her schedule, as she explained to her daughter.

"I said, 'Well, why don't you try the paralegal, you don't have to be a lawyer. It's a two-year program.' And she said, 'Well, I'll do it if you do it.' I go, 'You're on,'" said Jerald. "I took a year off. I finished the program in a year, so I'm actually a paralegal. And then I thought, 'Why did I just become a paralegal? I can be a lawyer.' So I just recently took that on."

But she's not giving up on her acting career.

"Well, hopefully, 'Castle' will keep going and I'll be a lawyer while I'm still doing 'Castle,'" she said.

Jerald is in her first year of law school. She recently completely a paralegal program with a 4.0 GPA. She tells us she'll probably end up practicing some kind of family law.
