OTRC: BAFTA Awards 2012: Full list of nominees

The 2011 film 'The Artist' is a silent, black and white film that depicts the lives of a declining actor named George Valentin, played by Jean Dujardin, and a rising actress named Peppy Miller, portrayed by Berenice Bejo, in Hollywood in the late 1920s. Around that time, silent films began to be phased out and were soon replaced by 'talkies,' or movies with dialogue. James Cromwell plays Valentin's driver, Clifton, while Penelope Ann Miller portrays the silent film actor's wife, Doris. The movie also stars John Goodman as producer Al Zimmer. The black and white silent film "The Artist" leads the race for the British Academy Film Awards with 12 nominations. It's followed close behind by the thriller "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," which got 11.

Both films are up for best picture and director, and their leading men - Jean Dujardin and Gary Oldman - are nominated for the best actor category.

"The Descendants," "Drive" and "The Help" are the other films up for best picture.

The other nominees for best actor are Brad Pitt for his role in "Moneyball," Michael Fassbender for "Shame" and George Clooney for "The Descendants."

The best actress category includes Michelle Williams for "My Week With Marilyn," Meryl Streep for "The Iron Lady," Berenice Bejo for "The Artist," Tilda Swinton for "We Need to Talk About Kevin" and Viola Davis for "The Help."

The awards ceremony is set to air on BBC on Feb. 12, 2012.
