The Huntington Beach City Council on Tuesday tentatively decided to lift the 20-year ban on the sale of fireworks.

Supporters want to allow the sale of "safe and sane" fireworks. But the city's fire and police chiefs oppose the measure, saying even state-approved fireworks could lead to fires.

The council is scheduled to make a final decision next month. If it passes, it will become law March 7.
