Katherine Heigl left "Grey's Anatomy" in January 2010 to raise her adopted daughter, but now the actress wants to return to the ABC medical drama.

"I've told them I want to (return)," Heigl told E! News. "I don't know... Being a show runner and being a writer of a TV series like that is so complicated that I mean she's [series creator Shonda Rhimes] got how many characters are there now? There's a lot and so she's balancing about 40 different storylines, so I don't know if it fits in to their sort of vision for this season or next or however many seasons it goes."

On the series, Heigl portrayed Dr. Izzie Stevens. The actress was openly critical about Izzie's character development, particularly with her romance with George O'Malley (T.R. Knight). Amidst speculation that Izzie would be killed off, she was instead diagnosed with Stage IV metastic melanoma.

Izzie went on to marry fellow doctor Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and her tumor was successfully removed. She last appeared in the sixth season, when she ended her relationship to Alex and left Seattle.

"I really, really, really want to see where [Izzie] is," Heigl continued. "I just want to know what happened to her and where she went and what she's doing now. My idea is that she actually like figures it out, and finds some success and does really well in a different hospital. She was always floundering you know, and so she was always one step behind the eight ball and I want to see that girl take some power back."

Heigl was one of the show's original cast members and won a Supporting Actress Emmy for her role in 2007.

Heigl requested to be released from her contract 18 months early so that she and her husband Josh Kelley could care for their daughter Nancy Leigh "Naleigh" Kelley, who they adopted from South Korea in September 2009.

Heigl and Kelley got married in December 2007 in Park City, Utah.

Heigl, 33, has done a string of romantic comedies, several of which have been considered box office flops. Her Ashton Kutcher comedy thriller "Killers" pulled in $47 million in the box office last year, but had a $75 million budget. The actress most recently appeared in "New Year's Eve" as a caterer and Jon Bon Jovi's love interest.

The actress began her career modeling before appearing in movies like "My Father the Hero," "Knocked Up" and "The Ugly Truth." Heigl also appeared on shows like "Roswell" and "Grey's Anatomy."

The eighth season of "Grey's Anatomy" premiered in September 2011.
