The Ventura Pier had to be shut down during high tide Sunday because waves of up to 10 feet crashed onto the pier.

A surfer at the beach was rescued after being trapped in the high surf.

Extra staff and patrols were active along the coast.

"This is a pretty big surf and it is that's something that's a challenge to us both in the rescue capacity but also just the number of people that it brings to the coastline," said Ventura County Fire Department Battalion Chief Fred Burris.

The storm system moving down from the northwest was expected to bring rain to the region Monday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued the following:

  • A winter weather advisory effective through 8 p.m. Monday for the Riverside County mountains.
  • A high surf advisory effective through 10 p.m. Monday for the Ventura and Los Angeles coasts and effective through 2 p.m. Tuesday for the Orange County coast.
  • A wind advisory effective through noon Monday for the Antelope Valley.
