The Los Angeles Police Department got a call shortly before 6 a.m. about a possibly mentally ill man who was creating a disturbance and threatening people inside a home on the 7700 block of Ethel Avenue.
Officers confronted the suspect, who was armed with a gun. LAPD spokeswoman Mitzi Fierro said after refusing to drop his gun, the man went at the officers and the shooting occurred.
The suspect was shot in the upper torso and died at the scene. Police recovered a handgun next to his body.
The man reportedly resided in the home. The people inside were his family members.
No officers were hurt in the shooting. The suspect's name is not being released at this time.
