Simon Cowell has opened up about his "complicated relationship" with Mezhgan Hussainy, his reported fiance, saying that the two are "not on" and "not off" and adds that he does not know if he will ever marry.
The 52-year-old British music mogul, who last year launched a U.S. version of his new singing contest series "The X Factor" on FOX, made his comments in a recent interview to the UK newspaper The Daily Mail, which reported he and Hussainy, a makeup artist and native of Afghanistan, last saw each other "briefly just before Christmas."
"It is quite a complicated relationship," Cowell said. "We have had a break from each other, and we are still incredibly close. I'm vulnerable. It's not on, it's not off, it's somewhere in the middle. I don't know if I will ever get married, but I am happy."
His spokesperson to OnTheRedCarpet.com confirmed his remarks were made to The Daily Mail, despite being printed by other outlets. Hussainy had no immediate comment.
Cowell and Hussainy, who is 39 and whose first name is pronounced "Mishgan," met on the set of "American Idol," where she began working as a makeup artist in 2002, while part of the second season was being filmed. The two began dating several years later.
In 2010, the two reportedly became engaged, although he has not talked about it publicly. Cowell has tended to keep his love life private.
But in an interview with talk show host Piers Morgan in early 2010, Cowell said, when asked about a diamond ring seen on his girlfriend's engagement finger: "What do you want me to say? I am smitten with Mezhgan. I think she is the one, yeah."
Also in 2010, Cowell said on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno:" "I do have somebody in my life, now, Jay, yes, and I kind of made a decision this year to make somebody happy. I bought her the ring in London."
Cowell talked about his relationship with Hussainy again on Howard Stern's satellite radio show on Sirius XM in September 2011. When asked if he was engaged, he joked: "Today, I'm not sure."
Hussainy and her family fled Afghanistan in the early 1980s following a Soviet invasion. They also lived for several months in nearby Pakistan before moving to the United States.
In addition to "American Idol," she has worked as a makeup artist on shows such as "America's Got Talent," where Morgan served as a judge before leaving the show last year, "Family Feud," "So You Think You Can Dance," "Rock Star INXS" and the plastic surgery reality show "The Swan."
Hussainy has been married once before. About 20 years ago, she wed Ahmed Shah Zahiri, a rug salesman in Southern California. They divorced after eight years, The Daily Mail reported in 2010.
Cowell has never been married but did live with his ex-girlfriend, television host Terri Seymour. The two dated for six years and broke up in 2008. He told Stern on his show that he also once went on a bizarre" blind date with Denise Richards, actor Charlie Sheen's ex-wife.
She turned up eight months pregnant and had a dog in her handbag," he said. "But she is gorgeous."
