Grandfather fatally struck by car while crossing street

INGLEWOOD, Calif.

Family members said Ruben Crummie was helping his cousin move her mattress in his pickup truck when he suddenly ran out of gas.

"Apparently he walked to get some gas, and on his way back to cross, they said a car was flying on Cresnhaw, it just hit him and knocked him down the street," said Crummie's stepdaughter, Kiesha Daniels.

Witnesses said he died with a gas can in his hand, as his cousin looked on from the passenger seat.

"She had to watch it all, and is just in disbelief," Daniels said.

Family members won't ever forget that smile, and all his stories.

"He's a good man, he raised me basically, if we ever need help, he's there," said the victim's granddaughter, Cynthia Leonard.

Police said this does not appear to be a hit and run, and it is not clear if the driver will face charges.
