Explosion at CA Marine base kills 1, hurts 2

COLEVILLE, Calif.

The blast went off around 9 p.m. on Friday in Coleville for the U.S. Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center.

Military officials say the wife of a U.S. Marine died and a Navy corpsman and his wife were injured. The officials were still not releasing the victims' identities Saturday morning, saying they were in the process of contacting next of kin.

Authorities say the explosion also damaged seven residences and forced the temporary evacuation of 38 families. They said the families have not been cleared to return to their homes.

Officials say a propane gas leak related to the military housing area's propane distribution system somehow ignited. The cause of the blast is being investigated.
