Malcolm X recorded speech uncovered at Brown University

PROVIDENCE, RI

In the recording, the activist argued why he thought racial integration wouldn't work and why African Americans should forge their own identity and culture.

"Whether it's in Providence or Mississippi, there is not a black man or woman in America who has intelligence, who hasn't gone somewhere around whites and felt like he was a social leper," Malcolm X is heard saying.

At the time, Malcolm X was a loyal supporter of the Nation of Islam, a black separatist movement. He spoke at Brown after a school paper released an article about the growing Black Muslim movement.
