OTRC: Nick Carter reportedly missed sister Leslie's funeral because of 'complicated' family dynamic

Leslie Carter, sister of Nick Carter of The Backstreet Boys and pop star Aaron Carter, died on Jan. 31, 2012 at age 25 in her father's and stepmother's house in Mayville in upstate New York. Leslie Carter, who was known as Leslie Ashton, is survived by husband Mike, who she married in 2008, and their daughter Alyssa Jane Ashton. The child was born in early April 2011. A police report later suggested that Ashton died of a prescription drug overdose. Her stepmother, Ginger Carterm told authorities that hours before the woman was pronounced dead, she acted depressed. She said she later found that Ashton had fallen in the shower. She said she laid her on a bed and even put her daughter on it 'in the hopes that Ashton would wake up and play with the baby,' according to a police report obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com. Ginger Carter did not specify the exact time she found Ashton in the shower or how much time the woman spent inside the bedroom. She said her husband and Ashton's father, Robert, came home soon around 4:16 p.m. and that the woman was 'not breathing or responding.' Robert Carter then tried to perform CPR on her. The police report states that Ginger Carter called 911 at 4:10 p.m. to report that Ashton was 'asleep on her bed and not breathing.' Paramedics arrived and transported her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 4:59 p.m. In 2006, Ashton appeared in the E! Entertainment Television reality series, "House of Carters" with her brother Nick, who turned 32 on January 28; her brother Aaron and his twin sister Angel, 24, and her sister Bobbie Jean, 30. The show aired for one season. In 2001, the rising starlet put out her first and only single, "Like Wow!," which was not a commercial success but did appeared on the soundtrack of "Shrek" soundtrack and in the film's end credits. Nick Carter reportedly missed his sister Leslie's funeral on February 5 because of a strained relationship he has with his family.

The pop singer, known as a member of the Backstreet Boys, told E! News in a statement on February 6, "I wanted to be at my sister's funeral, but my family has always had a complicated dynamic."

"I love my family. I want to thank everyone for all of their compassion and support that I have received during this most difficult time," he added.

It is unclear if Carter was aware of the funeral date but he also had professional obligations over the weekend and was performing, according to the report.

Leslie, who took on her husband Mike's last name of Ashton, was just 25 when she died on January 31. She passed away after being found unresponsive at her father and stepmother's home in Mayville in upstate New York.

The incident was dubbed an "overdose" in the police report by the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, which also said the local coroner's office plans to carry out a full autopsy to determine what led to the death.

Nick Carter, who once battled a 10-year-long addiction to alcohol and drugs such as cocaine, wrote on his Facebook page after the news broke, "Performing is cathartic to me. I am dedicating the rest of my tour to my sister since she loved to watch me perform."
