Cissy Houston has opened up about her daughter Whitney Houston's untimely death on Saturday.
"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Whitney," the gospel singer said in a statement obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com. "This is an unimaginable tragedy and we will miss her terribly. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from her fans and friends."
Cissy Houston, 78, is said to have talked to her daughter half an hour before her death about attending Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party, according to TMZ.
The entertainment outlet also reports that Houston talked to her cousin Dionne Warwick several hours earlier, to confirm that they would be sitting at the same table at that evening's party.
The 48-year-old singer was pronounced dead at a room at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California on Saturday, February 11.
Paramedics tried to revive her and pronounced her dead at about 3:55 p.m. Later that day, investigators for the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office worked inside the room to find the cause of her death as celebrities poured into the building for a pre-Grammy gala that Houston was supposed to attend. Producer Clive Davis, her mentor, dedicated the event to her (see photos).
The pop, soul and R&B singer had struggled with substance abuse for years. She relapsed and returned to rehab in May. Two days before she died, she celebrated and performed at a Los Angeles nightclub in what marked her final performance, although it is unclear whether she consumed alcohol (check out photos and video from the event).
Houston's ex-husband, Bobby Brown, was visibly upset during his concert with New Edition in Mississippi on Saturday, following the news of the singer's death. He cried on stage and reportedly broke down backstage before the show and was too distraught to perform in his band's opening number.
"I am deeply saddened at the passing of my ex-wife, Whitney Houston," Brown said in a statement. "At this time, we ask for privacy, especially for my daughter, Bobbi Kristina. I appreciate all of the condolences that have been directed towards my family and I at this most difficult time."
Houston married Brown in 1992 and filed a domestic abuse charge against him the following year. The pair got divorced in 2007. Houston had sole custody of the couple's only daughter, 18-year-old Bobbi Kristina Brown. She was at the Beverly Hilton hotel at the time of her mother's death and was rushed to the hospital on Sunday to be treated for stress and anxiety. She was released within hours.
"My daughter did visit with doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles," her father Bobby Brown says in a statement to People magazine. "She has been released and is presently with my family including her siblings... Obviously the death of her mother is affecting her. However we will get through this tragedy as a family."
