Octavia Spencer calls Oscar journey Cinderella moment

LOS ANGELES

After working 16 years in show business, Spencer clearly hit the jackpot with her winning performance in the book-turned-movie.

She has walked away with one award after another for her role as a sometimes mouthy maid named Minnie.

It turns out, her role wasn't too far from reality - Spencer speaks her mind, too. She says it's all she knows.

"If you speak your truth, then you don't have to worry about what you said the last time," Spencer said.

When asked how she feels about being labeled the "unfiltered one" going into Oscar season, Spencer didn't seem to mind a bit.

"Unfiltered? Well, you know, it is a bold drink I think. Octavia Spencer, the bold drink, unfiltered. I like it. I like it. We should put that in a can and sell it," she joked.

Spencer has spent the past several weeks on red carpets, always dressed to the nines, and she plans to show up on the ultimate red carpet, the Academy Awards, feeling like a "10."

Spencer said her Oscar journey started when she was nominated for Best Actress in Supporting Role for her part in "The Help." But she said her true Cinderella moment came when she won the Best Supporting Actress award at the Broadcast Films Critics Association Awards.

"Never would I have ever imagined that my name would be called among all of these beautifully brilliant actresses. So I'm already living that Cinderella moment and this is just frosting on the cake. I'm going to turn into a pumpkin on Feb. 27, so I'm going to enjoy this moment now," Spencer said, adding she's holding on to her glass slipper.

"I will shoot somebody if they try to take that glass slipper from me," she joked.

This Cinderella may come to the ball with a prince but she hopes to leave with an Oscar.

The awards ceremony will air live on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012 on ABC7. Coverage begins at noon PT.
