The first case that raised a red flag involved Mark Berndt, a Miramonte Elementary School teacher charged with 23 counts of lewd acts with students. His case was not properly reported to the state commission that handles credentialing for teachers.
The second case involves George Hernandez, an LAUSD substitute teacher charged with sexual misconduct with a student. Hernandez resigned from the LAUSD and got a teaching job in Inglewood, where he again was accused of sexually assaulting students.
Hernandez's case was not properly reported to the state commission. In that case, it could have prevented Inglewood from hiring him. The 45-year-old is on the run and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Superintendent John Deasy now is calling for a review of hundreds of cases.
