A federal appeals court has ruled the state of California can continue to force everyone arrested for a felony to submit a DNA sample.

The court says law enforcement's interest in solving cold cases, identifying crime suspects and even exonerating the innocent outweighs any privacy concerns.

The DNA samples are obtained with a swab of the cheek and stored in the state's massive DNA database. The American Civil Liberties Union sought to stop the collections.
