The black-and-white silent movie also won for best director for Michel Hazanavicius, lead actor for Jean Dujardin and the cinematography prize for Guillaume Schiffman.

"The Artist," which follows the life of a silent-era star whose career crumbes as talking pictures take over in the 1920s, is the best-picture favorite at Sunday's Oscars.

Other winners included Michelle Williams for best actress in "My Week with Marilyn."

Supporting-actor honors went to Christopher Plummer for "The Beginners" and Shailene Woodley for "The Descendents."

At the Oscars, Dujardin is in a two-man race for best actor against "The Descendants" star George Clooney.

Williams is nominated for best actress at the Academy Awards, though Viola Davis of "The Help" and Meryl Streep of "The Iron Lady" are considered the favorites to win.
