Downtown Los Angeles will soon be home to a Wal-Mart neighborhood market. It'll be located on the 700 block of west Cesar Chavez Avenue.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to open a 33,000-square-foot grocery store in a multi-story senior citizen apartment building. The store would be the first of the company's so-called "Neighborhood Markets" in L.A. County, said a Wal-Mart spokesman.

Much like other markets, the store will offer things like fresh produce, meats and dairy products. It'll also include a pharmacy.

Wal-Mart opened the first Neighborhood Market in 1998 as part of their healthy food initiative in underserved areas.

There are currently 167 across the country.

The city, which has five Walmarts, and the county, which has 28, generally have resisted the U.S.-based multinational store, which ranks as the 18th largest corporation worldwide and the biggest private employer, with 8,500 stores in 15 countries and about 2 million workers.
