"Rango" won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film on Sunday, February 26.
The movie, by director Gore Verbinski, beat "A Cat in Paris," "Chico & Rita," "Kung Fu Panda 2" and "Puss in Boots." The winners of the 2012 Academy Awards were announced at a Los Angeles ceremony that aired live on ABC.
Johnny Depp provides the voice of Rango, a pet chameleon who lives in a terrarium and aspires to be a swashbuckling hero and suddenly finds himself in a Western town full of bandits. When he accidentally kills a giant eagle, the town elects him sheriff and he is forced to become a real hero.
Actress Isla Fisher, wife of funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen, provides the voice of an iguana. She told OnTheRedCarpet.com she felt "so lucky" to be cast opposite Depp.
Depp had said it was nice to star in a movie that his children, Lily-Rose and Jack, could actually see, since some of his movies are less family-friendly.
This marks the first Oscar win for Verbinski, who directed Depp in the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, which see him playing Captain Jack Sparrow.
Depp has also signed on to portray Tonto in "The Lone Ranger," which is another Disney project being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
Baron Cohen attended the 2012 Academy Awards dressed like his latest film character, "The Dictator." On the red carpet, he poured ashes from an urn on Ryan Seacrest, saying they belonged to late North Korean Leader Kim Jong-il. (Check out photos).
