When Katy Perry debuted her new single, "Part of Me," at the Grammy Awards on February 12, she caused some people to speculate the break-up song's lyrics to be about her split from ex-husband Russell Brand.
However, in a recent interview, Perry claims she wrote the song two years ago, making it unlikely that it is about her recent break-up.
"I wrote it two years ago, which is funny because everybody is like 'God, it sounds so current,'" Perry, 27, told MTV News in an interview that can be seen blow. "And some people that I work with were like 'You should just say you wrote it a couple of weeks ago.'"
"I'm going to tell the truth.' I wrote it two years ago when I was writing and recording 'Teenage Dream,'" Perry added. "But it didn't feel right on the record. I would've had to take out one of my other songs that [made the album] a nice, complete package."
The 27-year-old pop singer and 36-year-old British comedian and actor reached a divorce settlement in early February, more than a month after he filed the papers.
Brand filed for divorce on Dec. 30, 2011, citing irreconcilable differences. He and Perry have no children. According to her recent filing, the singer has asked to restore her maiden name to Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson and also does not want the court to have any jurisdiction to award Brand any spousal support.
Perry, the daughter of California Evangelical pastors, married Brand on October 23, 2010 in a traditional Hindu ceremony in Rajasthan, India, where he also proposed to her. Their divorce papers do not specify when they split.
At one point Perry sings, "You took my light, you drained me down / That was then and this is now / Now look at me."
"I sit down and I write all these songs at once, all these emotions and feelings and thoughts," Perry said about her writing process. "And then, like, it just feels like sometimes I'm caught in this movie where my life is paralleling my music! It seems very serendipitous, but, as un-fun as it sounds, I prepare everything."
Perry is set to guest star on "Raising Hope" on March 6. The singer sports a curly red wig, a police officer's uniform and sports a hint of a mustache while on the show playing a prison attendant named "Rikki" who is a friend of Shannon Woodward's character Sabrina.
