MTV has expressed support for Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, following the "Jersey Shore" star's recent announcement about her pregnancy and engagement, but the future of the raunchy reality show remains uncertain.
The series, which depicts the lives of party-loving, self-proclaimed "Guidos and Guidettes" and is one of the top-rated cable programs, is on its fifth season. Polizzi, the show's breakout star, is nowadays filming a spin-off show with cast member Jenni "JWoww" Farley.
Polizzi announced via an Us Weekly magazine cover story, published on Wednesday, March 7, that she is expecting her first child and is engaged to the baby's father, boyfriend Jionni LaValle.
"We wish Nicole a healthy and happy pregnancy and congratulate her on her engagement. We support her as she starts this new chapter of her life," a network spokesperson said in a statement to OnTheRedCarpet.com.
The spokesperson added: "No decision has been made yet on a sixth season of 'Jersey Shore.'"
The season five finale airs on March 15 at 10 p.m. ET. A reunion show is set to be broadcast a week later. Both shows have been taped, an MTV spokesperson told OnTheRedCarpet.com.
Polizzi reportedly earns $100,000 per episode. MTV has not yet revealed a name and premiere date for her spin-off. "Jersey Shore" star Paul "Pauly D" Delvecchio also headlines a new show called "The Pauly D Project." It debuts on MTV on March 29.
"Congrats To My Girl @snooki," Delvecchio Tweeted on Wednesday. "So Happy For Her And Jionni!! I Better Be The Godfather :) #UncleDJPaulyD."
