Jessica Simpson, who is pregnant, says she shot her nude ELLE magazine cover without discussing it with her father and manager, "Papa" Joe Simpson.
The 31-year-old pop singer and mentor on the new NBC show "Fashion Star" made her comments in an interview with Jay Leno on an episode of "The Tonight Show" that aired on Monday. Her photo appears on the cover of ELLE's April 2012 issue and appears to be an homage to Demi Moore's famous 1991 Vanity Fair picture (see photos of female celebrities who have posed nude and pregnant).
"I don't think he would've recommended it," she joked about her father. "I don't even know if I told him. I just said I wanted to do it and we don't have to tell anybody about it. I haven't had a conversation with him about it. He is backstage so this makes for an awkward conversation afterwards."
Joe Simpson has managed both his daughter's and her sister Ashlee's singing careers for years. He posted a clothed photo of Jessica Simpson on his Twitter page in January, saying: "Looking beautiful. Go Jess."
His daughter said she posed for the ELLE cover a couple of months ago, adding: "I wanted to do it. ELLE didn't even ask me if I would want to do it, I just kind of always had this idea in my mind that I would do it."
The singer is expecting her first child, a baby girl, with football player Eric Johnson, who is also her fiance. Leno asked her when they planned on tying the knot.
"We're definitely going to be in each other's lives forever now. I want him to be my husband so bad and I do still want to wear the pretty gown and everything and I have to wait until after the wedding. And now she'll just be in the wedding," she said, referring to their daughter.
Jessica Simpson rose to fame with the MTV show "Newlyweds," which aired between 2003 and 2005 and starred her then-husband Nicky Lachey, whose current wife Vanessa is also pregnant. On the show, Simpson famously uttered the phrase, "Is this chicken what I have, or is this fish? It says Chicken By The Sea. So stupid," while eating tuna.
Jessica Simpson has since the series also become known for her $1 billion fashion empire. She and fellow fashion designers Nicole Richie and John Varvatos are mentors on the NBC show, "Fashion Star," which debuts on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. ET. Supermodel Elle Macpherson is the host.
"Fashion Star" sees contestants competing to become the next big fashion designer. The judges are buyers from major retailers such as H&M and Macy's.
She told Leno that she accidentally gave herself a nickname while filming the series.
"I came up with it because I was sweating my butt off and I just started calling myself 'Swamp-Ass,'" she said. "Like, I have swamp-ass right now. I have major swamp-ass because I was wearing these Spanx to hold in my gut, and now I want that gut. Like I look at myself in these promos and I can't wait to look that again. I'm wearing these Spanx and we're under these hot lights ... it's very humid in there."
"I didn't know that I was on camera saying it, so I'll probably end up embarrassing myself in episodes to come," she added.
