San Diego-area border agent injured after pursuit car explodes

PINE VALLEY, Calif.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials spotted a man driving his car the wrong way on Old Highway 80 in the Buckman Springs area early Thursday morning. In an attempt to stop the vehicle, agents deflated the car's tires and the driver finally pulled over.

When agents approached the car, however, the driver refused to open the window or the door. When the agent tried to break the window, the car exploded and burst into flames.

The agent suffered lacerations to his face and body as well as second-degree burns. He was airlifted to an area hospital for treatment. The driver of the car died on scene.

The name of those involved in the incident were not immediately released. Homicide detectives and bomb arson units are investigating the incident.
