Russell Brand recently got himself into some legal trouble after a run-in with a celebrity photographer in New Orleans, where he is filming a movie by Diablo Cody, and the British comedian and actor is already joking about it.
The 36-year-old is accused of tossing the man's cell phone through the window of a law firm office, TMZ said. A local police spokesperson said in a statement obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com that an arrest warrant was issued for a "simple damage charge for the amount of $700," but gave no further details.
"Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iPhone irreverently," Brand Tweeted on Wednesday. "What I did was a tribute to his memory."
Jobs, the late CEO and co-founder of Apple, which manufactures the iPhone, died last year. Depending on the model, the amount of memory installed in it and whether or not it comes with a provider contract commitment, the popular smartphone can retail for $699.
Brand has reportedly offered to pay for the broken window, MTV said.
In February, R&B star Chris Brown was accused of snatching a woman's iPhone outside of a Miami club after she snapped a photo of him. Police said they are investigating the matter. Brown was never arrested or charged.
Brand had a confrontation with a celebrity photographer at Los Angeles International Airport in September 2010. The man carried out a citizen's arrest of Brand, but the case was ultimately dropped. The comedian also joked about the incident, saying on his Twitter page: "Thanks for your sweet messages of support. After the tips I picked up in chokey I'm an infinitely more proficient criminal."
Pop star Katy Perry, the comedian's fiance at the time, came to Brand's defense, Tweeting: "If you cross the line & try an put a lens up my dress, my fiance will do his job & protect me."
The two married in October later that year. Brand filed for divorce in December 2011 and reached a settlement with Perry in February. She signed the papers with a smiley face.
Brand, known for his roles in movies such as "Get Him To The Greek" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," is currently in New Orleans to film a movie by Oscar-winning "Juno" screenwriter Cody. The movie's title has not yet been revealed.
The project marks Cody's directorial debut and is about a conservative woman who suffers a crisis of faith after surviving a plane crash. It also stars Julianne Hough, who appears with Brand in the 2012 film "Rock of Ages," and recent Oscar winner Octavia Spencer.
