Ex-Long Beach fire Capt. John Hines makes alcohol in jail

A former Long Beach fire captain convicted of drunk driving violated his probation by making alcohol in jail.

According to the Long Beach Press-Telegram, John Hines used salt to filter hand sanitizer while at the Huntington Beach jail and drank the ethanol it produced. Hines was ordered to serve four years in state prison for the violation.

Hines was convicted last year of drunk driving when he hit a bicyclist and left the man critically injured. He was allowed to serve probation and a year in jail where he worked as a janitor.
