17-year-old LA sheriff's explorer saves elderly man's life

LOS ANGELES

Bianca Olivares, who is based at the Walnut-Diamond Bar Station, was on her way home at about 8:45 p.m. Monday when she noticed a crowd of people surrounding an elderly man lying on the ground.

Explorer Olivares went to check things out, and that's when she noticed the elderly man was in extreme distress.

She quickly began administering CPR until paramedics arrived. Once stabilized, the patient was then transported to St. Jude Medical Center.

"I have to help him. Someone has to help him. They said they had called the paramedics already, but I didn't hear them in the distance. So I was the only one there within that group of people that knew how to do CPR, so I had to do something," said Olivares.

Officials say Olivares' quick response and training were instrumental in saving the elderly man's life.
