Robbery/carjacking pursuit suspect fatally shot by police in Sun Valley

SUN VALLEY, LOS ANGELES

LAPD Foothill Division officers received a call of a robbery in progress at 12:45 p.m. at a tobacco shop on the 8700 block of Glenoaks Blvd. A suspect reportedly shot an employee at the store during the robbery.

"The suspect left the tobacco shop, encountered some officers that were on an unrelated investigation across the street. At about the same time, a radio call went out," said LAPD Commander Joseph Hiltner. "Officers responding to that location observed the suspect. The suspect then carjacked a woman in a Mercedes down the street from that location."

The suspect crashed a short distance later and fled on foot. Police said that's when officers opened fire, killing the man on La Tuna Canyon Rd. near Wheatland Ave.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured in the shooting.

The tobacco store employee was hospitalized in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the leg. The carjacking victim was unharmed, according to police.

A weapon was recovered at the scene near the suspect's body. The incident was under investigation.
