OC inmate beating death: Man gets 15 years to life in state prison

SANTA ANA, Calif.

Last October, 44-year-old Stephen Paul Carlstrom was found guilty of second degree murder. Prosecutors say he helped kill John Chamberlain at the Theo Lacy Facility in Orange in 2006, because the inmates thought Chamberlain was a child molester. Chamberlain was in custody on misdemeanor possession of child pornography charges.

Chamberlain was pronounced dead at a hospital due to respiratory arrest from his broken ribs. He suffered fractures and cuts all over his body and face.

Six co-defendants have been convicted and sentenced in this case. Garrett Eugene Aguilar, 30, Anaheim, and Jared Louis Petrovich, 28, Tustin, were found guilty of one felony count of second degree murder. They were each sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison.

Miguel Guillen, 49, Santa Ana, was found guilty of one felony count of second degree murder. He has two prior strike convictions for assault with a deadly weapon from 1993. He was sentenced to 20 years to life in state prison.

Michael Stewart Garten, 26, Santa Ana, Christopher Teague, 35, Long Beach, and Jeremy Dezso Culmann, 28, Corona, pleaded guilty to one felony count of voluntary manslaughter. Garten was sentenced to 20 years in state prison. Teague and Culmann were each sentenced to 15 years in state prison.

Co-defendant Eric Charles Miller, 26, Huntington Beach, is charged with one felony count of murder and is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on April 20.
