Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are reportedly on board to do a sequel to the 1994 comedy "Dumb and Dumber."

Peter Farrelly, who wrote and directed the original film with his brother Bobby Farrelly, revealed during a junket for the brothers' new film "The Three Stooges" that the two are set to begin production on "Dumb and Dumber 2" later this year, according to ComingSoon.net.

"We're getting set to shoot 'Dumb and Dumber 2' in September," he said according to the movie news site. "It's the first sequel we've ever done and we've got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back."

The film franchise had a prequel called "Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd" starring Derek Richardson and Eric Christian Olsen as Harry (Daniels' role) and Lloyd (Carrey's role) released in 2003. However, although Peter and Bobby Farrelly wrote and directed the original, the two had no involvement in the prequel.

"That was a studio thing," Peter Farrelly said of the prequel to reporters. "So we've always wanted to do a sequel and finally Jim called up. Jeff always wanted to do it. We always wanted to do it."

Peter Farrelly added, "Jim was busy, but he called and said, 'We've got to do this thing again.' He had just watched 'Dumb and Dumber' and he said, 'This is the perfect sequel. Let's do it.'"

In 1995, there was a Saturday morning cartoon based on the film also called "Dumber and Dumber," but neither film actor provided the voice for their animated character.

The script for the new film is being written by Sean Anders and John Morris, who wrote "Hot Tub Time Machine" and "Mr. Popper's Penguins."

"Mr. Popper's Penguins" was Carrey's last film in theaters. The family movie took in $187 million at the worldwide box office in 2011. Up next on his slate is the film "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" with Steve Carell and Olivia Wilde.

Daniels stars in the new HBO series "The Newsroom" written by "The West Wing" and "Social Network" scribe Aaron Sorkin. The show also features Jane Fonda, Emily Mortimer, "Slumdog Millionaire" actor Dev Patel and Olivia Munn. The show will premiere on HBO on June 24.
