Dick Cheney released from hospital 10 days after heart transplant

WASHINGTON

According to a statement from the former vice president's office, the 71-year-old was released 10 days after receiving a new heart from an unknown donor.

"He would like to thank the physicians at Inova Fairfax and George Washington University Hospitals for the outstanding care they have provided. He and his family are also grateful to the ICU nursing staff at the Heart and Vascular Institute," the statement read. "As he leaves the hospital, the former Vice President and his family want to again express their deep gratitude to the donor and the donor's family for this remarkable gift."

Cheney waited nearly two years for the heart. He has had five heart attacks since the age of 37 and suffered his most recent one in 2010. He had bypass surgery in 1988 and had a pacemaker implanted in his chest in 2001.
