Anne Hathaway chopped off her hair for her role as Fantine in the upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical "Les Miserables."
Hathaway is currently filming "Les Miserables" with Hugh Jackman. In the musical, her character, Fantine, is fired from her factory job and sells her necklace, her hair and finally, her body so she can continue to send money to a nasty innkeeper and his wife who are taking care of her young daughter Cosette.
The role of Fantine was originally played by Patti Lupone in London's West End. Susan Boyle sang her solo song "I Dreamed a Dream" for her on-stage audition of "Britain's Got Talent," which made her a viral sensation and later, an international star.
Hathaway previously sported a short hair style in the 2010 film, "One Day," where the actress wore a wig for the role of Emma Morley (pictured above). She was photographed with her new pixie cut leaving London hot spot The Box, early Sunday morning, according to People magazine.
Hathaway joined the cast of "Les Miserables" in October. The film, which is currently filming in London, also stars Russell Crowe, Jackman, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter and newcomer Samantha Banks.
The drastic haircut is not the only transformation Hathaway will make to portray Fantine, she is also losing weight, though not as much as some tabloids suggested, when they reported in March that she was starving herself.
"The story is a huge exaggeration," her rep told the Huffington Post at the time. "Anne is on a special diet, but is not looking to lose that much weight, and she's consuming more than 500 calories a day. She just needs to look more frail as she is playing a prostitute who is dying of tuberculosis."
Hathaway is also preparing to get married. She and fiancé Adam Shulman celebrated their upcoming marriage with an engagement party, held in a bookstore in New York City, in February Us Weekly said. The celebration contained vegan dishes and flowers, namely ranunculus and anemones, placed inside bird-shaped vases, according to the magazine.
Hathaway and Shulman, 31, have not commented. The two are both from New York and dated for three years before their engagement, which was announced in November 2011. This will be the first marriage for the actress, who rarely discusses her love life in the press. No wedding date has been announced, but Us Weekly said the two are set to marry in October 2013.
