Highland woman, estranged husband found shot dead in apparent murder-suicide

HIGHLAND, Calif.

The victims were identified as Elizabeth Figueroa and Jesus Figueroa. Investigators said the couple was going through a divorce and had been married 35 years.

"It appears that both subjects were shot in the driveway of the home and that Jesus did suffer a self-inflicted gunshot wound," said Cindy Bachman, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the home in the 2700 block of Clifton Avenue around 9:30 a.m. Investigators said a weapon was recovered.

Stunned neighbors watched as crime scene investigators conducted their work.

Ronnie Olbert has lived in the neighborhood for almost a decade and said he walked by the Figueroa's home daily

"I really haven't heard much over there. I did hear some arguing the last couple of months, off and on. But I figured that was just a little something," Olbert said.

Neighbor Mamie Conners said she learned of the shooting in the morning when she left to take her brother to the airport.

"I'm really not surprised because it's going on quite a bit nowadays, with the economy and all that," she said. "People are desperate."
