Laguna Beach jewel thief arrested at Anaheim motel

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif.

A Laguna Beach resident filed a police report on April 2 after noticing $178,000 worth of jewelry was missing from the residence on the 1300 block of Moorea Way. The resident suspects the theft took place between Dec. 2011 and March 30.

The Laguna Beach Police Dept. investigated and found many people had access to the residence. One man caught police attention because he hurriedly left while they were taking the theft report.

Detectives went to the Orange apartment of Robert Efrurt, 52, but the landlord informed them Erfurt moved away on April 2.

Detectives discovered Erfurt was staying at a Robin Hood Motel in Anaheim on April 10 and detained the suspect there. He allegedly admitted to stealing the jewelry and produced the stolen jewelry from a magnetized box underneath his truck, according to police.

Erfurt was arrested and charged with felony grand theft and possession of methamphetamine. Police say Erfurt is a convicted felon who worked as a caretaker at the Moorea Way residence.
