3-year-old girl survives mauling by Rottweiler

VICTORVILLE, Calif.

"I was freaking out, she was all bloody, I mean there was blood everywhere," said Debra Jimenez, the mother of 3-year-old Hayley.

Jimenez says the dog belongs to a man who was staying overnight at her home. Apparently, he was a friend of one of her neighbors.

The dog was tied up in the backyard when Jimenez walked outside with her daughter.

"I walked a little further than her, I thought she was right behind me, and then I heard her say, 'Momma,' and I said, 'Wait a minute baby,' and when I turned around and looked, the dog was on her back, on top of her, and he had her whole head in his mouth, and I just started screaming and cussing and running toward the dog and hit the dog in the face and the dog backed off, and I grabbed her and ran in the house," she said.

The case is still under investigation, which is why animal control isn't commenting other than to say they're still looking for the dog's owner.

Jimenez says she doesn't know where he is either.

"We haven't seen the owner since this happened, he hasn't been back around, I heard he's hiding out," she said.

Jimenez says she doesn't blame the dog's owner, but does feel the animal should be put down.

She also had a warning for others.

"Just don't let your kids around any dogs, especially ones you don't know, any dogs can do this, even your own, you've gotta know them," she said.

The dog is currently under quarantine at the Devore Animal Shelter. San Bernardino Animal Control says a final determination will be made as to whether to put the dog down when the investigation is concluded.
