The president of the California Fish and Game Commission has been warned by the state ethics agency about accepting a hunting-trip gift in which he fatally shot a mountain lion in Idaho.

California Fish and Game Commission President Daniel Richards angered animal-rights activists when a picture surfaced showing him holding a mountain lion he shot and killed in Idaho. The practice is illegal in California.

California's ethics agency, the Fair Political Practices Commission, sent Richards a warning letter, but not for shooting the lion. The commission said he broke the law by accepting the hunting trip as a gift.

Richards has since repaid the amount and the case is now considered closed.
