"The Rockford Files" TV series might get a big screen remake like "21 Jump Street" and "Starsky and Hutch."

Deadline.com reports that "Wedding Crashers" and "The Dilemma" actor Vince Vaughn could star in the film, based on the television series that starred James Garner and ran from 1974-1980. Universal Pictures has reportedly picked David Levien and Brian Koppelman, the writing team behind films like "Rounders" and "Ocean's Thirteen," to write the screenplay for the film.

The 42-year-old actor would play James Rockford, a private investigator who spent five years in San Quentin Prison in California due to a wrongful conviction. After he receives a pardon, he begins taking cases in his mobile home parked in a lot by the beach in Malibu, California.

Movie audiences will soon see Vaughn back on the big screen in "Neighborhood Watch," alongside Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade. The movie was written by "Knocked Up" and "50/50" star Seth Rogen and "The Green Hornet" writer Evan Goldberg.

"Neighborhood Watch" follows a group of men who form a neighborhood watch team as an excuse to spend time away from their families but eventually get caught up in a plot that threatens humanity. That film is set for release on July 27.
